The drumbeat of events included a frantic Presidential campaign, the roar of Vietnam, two assassinations in two months, student rebellion, riots and cultural upheaval. But even as it happened, 1968 was recognized by those witnessing it as a watershed. The dripping was in the cave is another memory from the beginning when McCarthy introduces the novel. The Year the Dream Died: Revisiting 1968 in AmericaĪs news unfolds day to day, most years seem historic only in hindsight.

Boy depend on his father for quite a long time but his world will wake up as soon as he’s gone. Man already knew this day will come up soon because he demand boy to carry the fire meaning be independent of himself. Boy’s world will wake up meaning everything will change since his dad’s absence. Old dreams is the representation of man who is a old man with wisdom which McCarthy uses “dream” to symbolize him. Man has little life left and will soon die which is the sign of the fading light.

The word encroached means intrude on but in a more violent way. Old dreams encroached is to represent Man’s life whom affect someone’s life boy. Man’s soul fades away slowly and slowly as he lies listening to boy. Fading makes the dream more emotional, it adds emotion because fading goes dark slowly and slowly. The use of the fading light is to represent his life, because light is life. The purpose of this dream is this dream is to alert the audience of Man’s upcoming death. The dream that McCarthy speaks of connects to the beginning of the book, he begins with a dream and dies with a dream. Old dreams encroached upon the waking world. One last item to mention, the fact that the dream is too perfect and Man just always wakes up from this perfect dream into the reality of the world. Man just wish to escape the decay world and enter the utopia world along with his son. It almost seems as the dream is a visual representation of paradise- birds singing, the sun, human love, and the color world. Man wishes to always see light in this world which is what McCarthy last writes about. Finally, the sun is the metaphor representation of light.

Songs of birds is to represent that their sounds are unique and beautiful, which is the reason the author choose this object. Human love is a huge symbol for the world united as one and the representation of the peace sign. The author speaks of human love, songs of birds, and finally the sun. When he moves to the dream, McCarthy describes as a perfect world. The use of black is to symbolize the deathly and negativity in the world he lives in now and freezing waste is to represent the cold weather along with the disasters that have occur which is the use of the word- waste. If he wakes sometimes from this dream, it means that Man can not stop what he dreams and if he dreams this, he prefers the utopia world over the decay world. First, the authors starts off when he speaks of sometimes he’d wake, the use of the word “sometimes” signifies that Man dreams of this for quite a long time after the apocalypse. Also it comes in hand that he uses duality in this dream reality world and the utopia world. In this dream, McCarthy does not give much descriptive details, but it’s what Man desires. “In the nights sometimes now he’d wake in the black and freezing waste out of softly colored worlds of human love, the songs of birds, the sun. Man varies his words well and the dreams he wakes up from are very meaningful. This happens with humans sometimes, one wants to say something but won’t speak on the first try, they have to have some persuading in hand in order to say a word. Another item to point out, is that maybe Man wishes Boy to insist on him to tell him his dreams.

Also man could just be hiding what he truly means, for example that he loves what he dreams of but is not brace enough to accept the reality. If the dreams were actually a bad sign, he would not dream them or his mind would focus on something else other than what he currently dreams of. His opinion about good dreams being bad luck is his mind controlling what he says. Man could probably refers to that everytime he dreams of something, something bad happens to him and boy. Man thinks that his dreams are bad, but according to McCarthy they’re special since the are descriptive and bring vivid life. He does not wish to speak of his wife anymore because it will just bring more memories into place. Most of man dreams are about the old world and his wife. He express that none of his past dreams are good enough to even be mention. You said that was okay because good dreams are not a good sign” (McCarthy, 269) They’re always about something bad happening.
